Mount Vernon Viaduct Project

  • The Mt. Vernon Avenue Viaduct is a 1,016 foot bridge that was built in 1934 and spans over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) Railway Intermodal Yard in the City of San Bernardino.
  • In 1997, Caltrans inspectors determined the bridge had a sufficiency rating of less than 50 out of a possible 100, which is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Since 2004, the bridge has been closed to traffic twice to shore up support columns. Although it remains in service for passenger vehicles, it no longer allows commercial vehicles to cross the bridge.
