IE511 — Know Before You Go

Formally launched in April 2010, the Inland Empire 511 (IE511) system provides robust, up-to-the-minute traffic and mobility options to motorists online and by phone.

Project partners include the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and contractors.

    • Helps Inland Empire commuters avoid delays and freeway closures with real-time traffic information.
    • Helps with finding alternative ways of transportation (i.e., ridesharing).
    • Improves overall traffic congestion, mobility, and quality of life in the Inland Empire.


  • History

    In July of 2000, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 511 as the national travel information phone number.  However, the FCC did not provide a funding source and left the implementation and funding decisions to the States and local agencies.

    A section in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act (SAFETEA-LU) required that a national 511 system, including a comprehensive website, be established by 2010. Currently, 40 states have some form of a 511 system, serving approximately 70% of the nation's population.
