Local Artists Needed for Utility Boxes Along New West Valley Connector Bus Rapid Transit Route

April 22, 2026

Local artists have the chance to create artwork that will be on public display along the 19-mile West Valley Connector Bus Rapid Transit route, currently under construction in the cities of Ontario, Pomona, Montclair, and Rancho Cucamonga. The artwork will be displayed on utility boxes at 33 locations along the route.

The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) and its partner cities are seeking artwork that not only serves as a deterrent to graffiti but also celebrates the uniqueness of each city and the region as a whole.

Artists have until May 13, 2026, to submit their interest and qualifications to a review panel comprised of members from each of the cities where the new bus route travels. Submissions can come from a single artist or a team of artists. Application requirements include:

  • Resume
  • Professional references
  • Letter of Interest including an outline of your qualifications and relevant experience, interest in this project and a general approach to this project
  • Eight JPEG images of previous works by all team members, including detailed descriptions of each image
  • Residence in San Bernardino, Los Angeles, or Riverside counties

The full scope of these requirements can be found here.

Following the May 13, 2026, deadline, applications will be reviewed and a group of artists will be selected to develop and submit concepts for the utility box designs. The program is expected to conclude in late August with the submission of final artwork designs.

SBCTA’s West Valley Connector Project will be a 100 percent, zero-emission Bus Rapid Transit system. It serves as the first stage of the San Bernardino County Zero-emission Bus Initiative and second bus rapid transit route in San Bernardino County. Phase I of the project is 19 miles and will upgrade a portion of existing Route 61 which runs along Holt Boulevard, adding approximately 3.5 miles as center-running, dedicated bus-only lanes.

There will be 21 stations, each with a set of utility boxes, in Phase I that will provide a much improved transit connection to Ontario International Airport (ONT) and help build transit connectivity by linking ONT, two Metrolink lines (San Bernardino and Riverside) and multiple major activity centers along the route including Ontario Mills and Victoria Gardens. Headways will be 10 minutes in the peak commute period and 15 minutes off-peak, providing a high level of service to the community. Construction is expected to conclude in late 2026.
