As Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) and County of San Bernardino are celebrating the iconic highway with the launch of a special centennial website dedicated to highlighting the uniqueness of all 250 Route 66 miles spanning the county.
The website shares the history of Route 66 through stories, past and present, highlights upcoming Route 66 events, and includes a map of the historic Mother Road making its way from Needles at the California-Arizona border, through Upland and the Los Angeles County line.
Regionally, Route 66 in San Bernardino County is more than a historic highway; it is a connective thread to the region’s past, present, and future. As we celebrate the history of Route 66, we look forward to a bright future because of Measure I.
Measure I is San Bernardino County’s half-cent sales tax dedicated to transportation improvements, first approved by voters in 1989 and overwhelmingly extended in 2004. Administered by SBCTA, Measure I ensures funds are reinvested locally, meaning each region benefits directly from the revenue it generates.
Preserving Route 66’s legacy in the county has been an important project for us, and we continue our commitment to preserve this iconic route that is more than just a highway, but rather a muse that has inspired movies, music, memorable road trips, and milkshakes at roadside diners.
As part of the 100th anniversary, we are in search of favorite photos from Route 66 or any Route 66 Centennial celebrations. Share your images of road trips, landmarks, communities, favorite foods, and events along the Mother Road for a chance to be featured on SBCTA’s social media channels—Facebook, Instagram, and SBCTA’s dedicated Route 66 centennial website.
We are looking for photos taken over the past 100 years, so please share what you have and help us tell the generational stories of Route 66. Share your photos here.
