On the morning of July 31, 2026, two Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) drivers showed exactly why they are known as “heroes of the highway.” Just after 8:20 a.m., a serious crash on SR‑60 involved a Ford F‑150 that had collided with a CALTRANS truck. The impact caused the pickup’s engine compartment to catch fire, leaving the driver trapped inside with a severe leg injury as flames began to spread toward the cab.
FSP Drivers Jonathan Martinez and Nicholas Farias arrived within minutes. Without hesitation, they rushed toward the burning vehicle. They quickly saw that the driver was unable to escape on his own and that every second counted. Working together, they forced open the damaged door and pulled the injured man from the truck as the fire moved dangerously close to the windshield and driver’s seat.
With no other bystanders on scene to help, Martinez and Farias carried the driver approximately 200 feet away from the growing fire. By the time they reached a safe distance, the flames had already consumed the truck’s cab. Their quick action not only prevented further injury, but it very likely saved the man’s life. Fire crews arrived shortly afterward to extinguish what was left of the vehicle.
