Modern Mobility with a Focus on Safety: SB Express Lanes and the Road Ahead

May 21, 2025

San Bernardino County’s investment in express lanes, such as the SB Express Lanes on I-10 and future projects on I-15, is about more than just easing traffic congestion. These projects, led by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), are designed to relieve congestion throughout the corridor and provide trip reliability and time savings for those who choose to pay a toll and use the express lanes, as well as support economic growth in one of the fastest-growing regions in southern California. As we plan for the future, we are committed to providing transportation solutions that are efficient, accessible, and secure.

Recently, a surge in nationwide phishing scams targeting drivers with fake “unpaid toll” text messages has raised concerns. Scammers impersonate toll agencies to steal personal and financial information. In response, tech companies like Google are updating Android systems to help detect and warn users about these fraudulent messages. These efforts highlight a growing need to protect drivers as tolling systems become more common across the country. For SBCTA, this underscores the importance of public awareness and adopting safeguards to ensure a safe and trustworthy tolling experience.

It’s important for drivers to know that the SB Express Lanes’ account and payment processing partner, The Toll Roads, will never contact customers via unsolicited text messages demanding payment with a link to a website. We communicate through official channels such as mailed notices, emails from verified addresses, or through your secure account portal. If you receive a suspicious message about an unpaid toll, it’s a scam. When in doubt, always visit official websites or contact customer service directly to verify.

As SBCTA expands express lanes to I-15 and beyond, integrating technology and prioritizing customer security remain at the forefront. Through collaboration with our partners and ongoing public education, we are dedicated to staying ahead of fraud alerts and protecting our community. Together, we’re building more than just a new travel option – we’re building smarter, safer ways to move San Bernardino County forward.
