SBCTA Extends Regional 511 Partnership to Keep Travelers Informed

April 7, 2026

The SBCTA Board of Directors approved an amendment to the regional Southern California 511 Traveler Information System agreement, extending the program through June 2031. The 511 system is a vital tool that provides real‑time travel information to residents and commuters across San Bernardino County and the broader Southern California region. By extending the agreement and continuing SBCTA’s partnership with the Los Angeles County Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies and the Riverside County Transportation Commission, the Board reinforced its commitment to keeping travelers informed, connected, and safe.

Originally launched in the Inland Empire in 2010, the 511 system has become an essential resource for navigating Southern California’s complex transportation network. Through a single phone number, website, and mobile app, users can access live traffic updates, incident alerts, transit information, and travel‑time estimates. Last year alone, the system received more than 305,000 calls and recorded more than 2.1 million website visits, clear signs that residents rely on it regularly to make smarter travel choices and avoid congestion.

The approved amendment extends operations for five additional years and provides funding to maintain and improve the system. It also ensures that the region continues to benefit from a unified 511 platform, rather than separate systems divided by county lines. This coordinated approach gives drivers a seamless experience, making it easier to get accurate information whether they are traveling locally or across county borders.

By updating this agreement now, SBCTA is helping sustain a trusted service that supports everyday mobility for millions of travelers. The SoCal 511 system reduces frustration, enhances safety by alerting drivers to incidents and hazards, and helps the public stay informed during emergencies. With this Board action, San Bernardino County residents can continue to count on reliable, up‑to‑date travel information as the region grows and transportation needs evolve.
