SBCTA Releases RFP for SR-62 Improvement Project in Yucca Valley

May 13, 2025

The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) is moving forward with the next step in the State Route 62 Improvement Project in Yucca Valley. The proposed project, located along a heavily traveled three-quarter-mile segment of SR-62, aims to relieve congestion and enhance safety through the addition of outside channelization lanes in both directions and improvements to three key intersections, including the junction at SR-247.

In accordance with state requirements and following a letter of intent submitted to Caltrans in September 2024, the project will begin with the development of a Project Study Report-Project Development Support (PSR-PDS) document. This report will define the project’s purpose, scope, estimated costs, and schedule, and will position the project to move into the environmental phase. SBCTA entered into a cooperative agreement with the Town of Yucca Valley in December 2024, designating SBCTA as the lead agency for both the PID and PA/ED phases of development.

To maintain momentum on the project delivery schedule, SBCTA staff intends to bring a recommended contract for Board approval in the fall. Funding for the PID, PA/ED, and anticipated Caltrans oversight will be provided through the Morongo Basin Measure I Major Local Highway Program, while project management costs will be covered by the Town of Yucca Valley. The release of this RFP marks a key milestone in advancing transportation improvements that support regional mobility and economic vitality in the Morongo Basin.
