SBCTA Advances US 395 Phase 2 Widening Project with Construction Contract Award

November 12, 2025

SBCTA is moving forward with the next phase of a major regional highway improvement effort along U.S. Route 395, awarding the construction contract for the US 395 Phase 2 Widening Project to Griffith Company in the amount of $41.85 million. The project, which will widen the corridor from two to four lanes between Interstate 15 and Palmdale Road, represents a significant investment in safety, capacity, and economic growth for the High Desert and beyond.

Designated as a “Priority Interregional Highway” by Caltrans, US 395 serves as a vital goods movement and agricultural corridor connecting inland counties with the Central Valley. The widening project will help alleviate congestion, improve travel times, and enhance mobility for both commuters and freight traffic, strengthening one of the region’s most critical north–south transportation links.

The construction award follows a competitive bidding process issued in August 2025, which attracted strong industry interest. Four bids were received, with Griffith Company submitting the lowest responsive and responsible bid, coming in approximately 35 percent below the engineer’s estimate. The contract term extends through December 2029, with funding provided through a combination of Measure I, Surface Transportation Block Grant Program, Trade Corridor Enhancement Program, State Highway Operations and Protection Program, and a Federal Earmark.

By advancing one of the region’s most important transportation corridors into the future, SBCTA continues its commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure improvements that enhance safety, mobility, and economic opportunity throughout San Bernardino County.
