Electric Vehicle Charging Station Fee Schedule Gets Update

January 8, 2022

On January 5th, 2022, the SBCTA Board of Directors conducted a public hearing and unanimously approved an update to the fees associated with electric vehicle charging stations. The agency owns and operates fourteen charging stations, nine located at the Santa Fe Depot and five stations at the San Bernardino Transit Center.

Agency staff conducted a comparative analysis to benchmark SBCTA’s fee structure to other public and privately operated charging stations in San Bernardino County. The updated fee schedule per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for the more standard Level 2 charging stations, which can fully charge in 4-6 hours, will remain at $.25 per kWh. Idle fees, fees charged after a vehicle is fully charged, will be reduced from $5 per hour to $2 per hour and the grace period increased from one hour to two hours without a fee. The more rapidly charging Level 3 stations, which can typically provide an 80% charge in 30 minutes, will have their fee per kWh reduced from $.50 to $.30, while the idle fee will remain $10 per hour after 60 minutes.

The new fee structure ensures that charging station fees are consistent with market trends throughout the County, while also promoting zero-emission vehicle implementation and providing value and benefit to local residents and commuters.
